The day has come! Today we started creating our whirligigs! Students began to trace his/her templates on pieces of wood, drill holes through the body of the whirligig where the wings will attach, and cut out the outline of the whirligig. The last class day to work on whirligigs will be Friday 4/29.
Students took the band saw quiz to demonstrate knowledge of the band saw and how to safely use it. Then students will begin to start using the drill press and band saw while Mrs. LaRosa watches to ensure they are using it correctly. Students also started brainstorming a drawing up his/her template for his/her whirligig design.
Students demonstrated their knowledge of the Drill Press by completing a drill press safety quiz. Then students reviewed safety rules about the band saw and watched a demonstration on how to use the band saw safely. The worksheet with the band saw safety rules are attached to the 8th grade calendar. Students took a safety quiz to demonstrate their knowledge of the safety rules. Then students reviewed safety rules about the drill press and watched a demonstration on how to use the drill press safely. The worksheet with the drill press safety rules are attached to the 8th grade calendar. Today we reviewed the general safety rules quickly in class. Remember to get the contract signed for homework and to study for the safety quiz!!! Students also took a pre-assessment in measuring to demonstrate if they can read a ruler. This is a skill that we will use often this year while making projects! Today we went over the daily procedure for class and completed a "puzzling activity". This activity made us realize that there are often additional problems/dilemmas hidden within the bigger problem and it our job as engineers to try to anticipate smaller problems but also adapt to these problems as we encounter them. Also the activity showed us the importance of teamwork and communication. Did this activity show or teach you anything else?
