In class students watched an episode of Design Squad called "Cardboard Furniture". Students identified what was done at each step of the design process and answered some conclusion questions about the importance of the design process. The conclusion questions were assigned for HOMEWORK. Students watched a TED video and related their experiences with the others who took the Marshmallow Challenge. Students went through the steps of the design process while trying to build the tallest free standing structure out of 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1 yard of string, 1 yard of tape and a marshmallow in 18 minutes. The entire marshmallow had to be on top of the structure.
Check out the Marshmallow Challenge Website for more details. Today, students demonstrated their knowledge of the safety rules by taking a quiz.
Today we reviewed the general safety rules quickly in class. Remember to get the contract signed for homework and to study for the safety quiz!!! Students also took a pre-assessment in measuring to demonstrate if they can read a ruler. This is a skill that we will use often this year while making projects!
Today we went over the daily procedure for class and completed a "puzzling activity". This activity made us realize that there are often additional problems/dilemmas hidden within the bigger problem and it our job as engineers to try to anticipate smaller problems but also adapt to these problems as we encounter them. Also the activity showed us the importance of teamwork and communication. Did this activity show or teach you anything else?
