When done with the bridge investigations lab, student will go to the PBS NOVA site to look at different types of bridges and complete the "Which Bridge" Worksheet.
Students will start researching stresses, bridge strength factors and types of bridges. This at home project is due November 2nd or 3rd. Students need to measure all the dimensions of an everyday object and then scale it up or down by a common factor and build a model to create a scale model of the original object Scaling shapes lab:Students practiced doubling dimensions of various shapes and creating a scale model. Then students worked on discovering the relationship between the two object's volume. Shadow Fractions lab: Students compared the size of an object and its shadow at different distances from a wall and created ratios and then looked at the data to find relationships. Students extended what they learned about scaling to 3 dimensional shapes, enlarging and decreasing the dimensions of a simple 3-D shape proportionally and then creating a scale model of the original out of poster board.
Students will identify the steps of the design process as they a design squad video complete the worksheet. Students practiced enlarging and reducing dimensions of various 2-D shapes. Student reflect, first independently and then with their group on their coffee stirrer bridge design. Students will design a bridge out of coffee stirrers and tape. Their goal is to make it hold as much as possible.
